WILD ANIMALS
We’re extremely lucky to live in a wild place. But being in Montana means that you may encounter potentially dangerous animal while staying at Orofino. Mountain lions, moose, and bears are native to the area. Encounters with these animals are very, very rare.
There is a can of bear spray by the front door hanging on the coat rack. You’re welcome to take the when going out on the trails or the grounds.
Please DO NOT use this without reading the information below:
-
Keep bear spray readily accessible in a quick draw holster, not stored in your pack. You don’t have to be a good shot with bear spray. Just put up a cloud of spray between you and the charging bear.
Do not use bear spray like insect repellent. It does not work as a deterrent when applied to people or equipment.
No bear deterrent is 100% effective: learn how to reduce your risk while hiking in bear country.
Bear spray can explode if it reaches 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Don’t store it in the passenger compartment of vehicles or near any heat sources.
-
Remove the safety clip from the bear spray (orange on top)
Aim slightly down and adjust for crosswind
Begin spraying when the charging bear is 30-60 feet (10-20 yards) away
Spray at the charging bear so that the bear must pass through a cloud of spray
Keep spraying until the bear changes direction If the bear continues to charge, spray into its face
Leave the area promptly
-
Do not hike or run alone, keep children close to you.
If you see one: do not approach the animal, do not run, do not crouch, do everything you can to appear larger, and fight back if attacked.

There is often low-key live music in the front cocktail lounge area which makes waiting for a table no problem at all. The soft, low lighting creates an intimate dining experience and the service is friendly and accommodating. Luccas

Oh, Lucca’s. You are, by far, the special occasion destination in all of Helena. Why? The service is top-notch . The entire room is bathed in a warm, amber light. There is a candle on each table. Linen napkins and proper silverware settings. Riedel glassware. An awesome wine list. Full bar. Amazing food. Lucca’s most often seats by reservation only, although there are times when the lucky few manage to slip in. This means, you may have to plan in advance a little, but, once you do get a table, it is yours.
Orofino Favorite: Shrimp Fra Diavolo, Pork Chop with Apple and Rosemary, Tiramisu.
-
Big Dipper Ice Cream
58 N Last Chance Gulch, Helena, MT
Big Dipper Ice Cream is a BIG deal in Helena. The small town ice-cream shop specializes in unique flavors like cardamom, chai, huckleberry, and prickly pear sorbet, to name a few. They also offer homemade waffle cones (highly recommended) which emit a powerful heavenly scent in and around the shop. If you opt for a Starship Sundae, the brownies are baked by a local shop down the street. During the warmer months, the line is long but so worth the wait. And, you will often see folks and families chatting and catching up while they wait in line. It’s less of a drag and more of a social event. Welcome to the Helena lifestyle.
